Its been one month

Well, it has been one month since I started this blogging thing, or since the Twins started their season. So, I'm offering to you, again, another opportunity to join my "Walks for a Walker" program. In case you are new to this I'm walking the Susan G. Koman 3 day breast cancer walk. That means that I need to walk 60 miles over three days. Basically from what I understand, it is a little over 20 miles the first 2 days and about 15 miles the 3 day. However, in order to walk I also need to raise money, which leads me to my explanation of my "Walks for a Walker" program. For this, you send me an email, or you can comment, that you want to donate x amount of money per Twins walk. For instance, you can donate 25 cents per walk. That means that, for example, today you would donate $1 since the Twins had 4 walks. It is a pretty easy and painless program. I really hope that you would like to participate in my program. If you just want to donate right now, feel free. There is a link on the side which makes it easy for you to donate. If you decide to join my "Walks for a Walker" program, I will send you an email at the end of each month to let you know where you stand regarding how much you should donate.

If you feel like helping women keep their boobs, then please donate!

Dear Twins...

Dear All Members of the Minnesota Twins team,

This letter is geared towards all the Twins players that are hitters. I have some beef for you. Dick and Bert have been doing a "what's my beef" and here is mine. You have to stop swinging at every frickin' pitch! You are not required to hit the ball pitched at you. There is a reason that in the rules of baseball there are BALLS and STRIKES. Each one of you hitters is given 4 FREE pitches! That means that if you take the first 2 pitches, you, at worst, have 2 strikes and at best you have 2 balls. If you have 2 balls you are half-way to a free base. That's right. I don't know if anyone told you that. YOU ARE HALF WAY TO A FREE BASE! I think the only two player on the ENTIRE Twins team that seems to have grasped this concept are Justin Morneau and Joe Mauer. In the first month of play they have over 1/3 of the walks. That's right 1/7th of the team has 1/3 of the walks. THAT IS NOT RIGHT.

Here are the following Twins that have 1 walk or less in the 1st 30 days of the season:
Michael Cuddyer
Adam Everett
Mike Redmond
Brian Buscher

Here are the following Twins that have 2 walks in the 1st 30 days of the season:
Carlos Gomez
Nick Punto

And Here are the Twins that have 3 walks in the 1st 30 days of the season:
Mike Lamb
Mike Tolbert
Jason Kubel
Craig Monroe
Denard Span

And to make all you Twins feel bad:
Nick Markakis on the BALTIMORE ORIOLES has 22 walks in the 1st 30 days of the season.
Albert Pujols has 28 walks in the 1st 30 days of the season.

My point to all you Twins. WALK! DON'T swing at every pitch! Do you not understand that for every walk you earn I have a team of people who are donating money to the Susan G. Koman 3 day walk?! Do you not understand that your walks are helping find a cure to breast cancer?! I have read Ball Four so I know exactly how much baseball players like boobs. So, in conclusion, if you are a Twins player, and you like boobs then don't frickin' swing at the pitch!! AND for the love of G-d if you have a 3-1 count DO NOT SWING AT THE BALL UNLESS YOU KNOW YOU ARE GOING TO HIT A HOMERUN!

Love,
Laurie

To all other's ... I managed to walk 3 miles on the treadmill and not see any strange people.

Its a Rest Day

Hello all readers! I am sorry I didn't post yesterday, but things were kind of crazy and when I got home last night I was beat. I decided going to sleep at 9:30 was better for my health than posting. Just to keep you informed, on Sunday I did walk the 3 miles required. 3 miles felt like nothing after walking 4 miles and 5 miles the two previous days. My time walking on the treadmill just flew by, which was a good thing considering the person next to me on the treadmill. See, the apartment building I live in is full of characters. Just to give you a feel of the people that live in my building here are the nicknames Will and I have given them and the reason behind it:
- Safari-man: this is a man who ONLY wears khaki shorts or pants, hiking boots and khaki safari type shirt. Honestly, Will and I have only seen him ONCE not in this outfit and then he was wearing forest green pants, the khaki shirt and bots.
- red-backpack-mike: this man lives on our floor and we have NO CLUE how he managed to get himself married. He wears a red-backpack everywhere he goes and I don't think he ever works.
- bug-woman: (I don't think Will knows of this woman) but she parks near me. She looks like a bug that has just been zapped. Hair going everywhere and eyes popping out of her head and is always dazed like she was just zapped.
THEN... after safari-man is our favorite character...
- SINGING MAN: in defense of this man, he has an amazing bass voice. However, it is a BOOMING bass voice and he literally sings musicals everywhere he goes: in a full elevator, walking through the garage, doing his laundry, waiting for the elevator, cleaning his treadmill. Oh, and he manages to only sing "If I Were a Rich Man" or "Old Man River."

Singing man leads me to my awful treadmill experience this weekend, and the one thing that may get me walking no matter what the rain is. Mr. Singing Man, I have found out this weekend, likes to walk on the treadmill in the itsty-bitsty-est shorts. As in I think basketball players in the1970s/80s wore longer shorts. AND they are too tight. If this isn't enough of a reason to leave the treadmill, then maybe the fact that about every 20-30 seconds he goes "UGH" like he has just lifted 300lbs. BUT HE IS WALKING! And of course, a man like this could not sweat up a storm. So, in summary the man I was walking my 3 miles next to is sweaty, wearing TOO tight, TOO short shorts and going "UGH." Would you agree with me that it is time to walk outside whenever I see him around?

Well, tomorrow is a 3 mile day!

5 miles!

Today the weather was beyond crappy. Not only was it cold and very windy, but it was SNOWING. It was frickin' snowing in almost the last week of April. I have to say that it is NOT SUPPOSED TO SNOW THIS CLOSE TO MAY! But... at least I'm not up north where some places got 18 inches of snow. If the people in New Orleans think the Mississippi is high, just wait a week when this snow melts.

Anyway, today was my first 5 mile walk. I figured it would definitely take me over an hour to walk 5 miles, so I thought that if I could find something on tv (and get to the gym when no one was there) that the first hour of my walk wouldn't be so bad. I was correct about this. I woke up early this morning (630a to be exact - Will had to be at work around 7). I hung around the apartment until I really did wake up and then right before 9 I turned on Bravo and realized that "Step Up and Dance" was going to be on at 9 (and it was an episode I had not seen). Let me go ahead and admit that I am addicted to ALL Bravo reality shows, except the Kathy Griffin one. So, I quickly got dressed for the gym and made it downstairs about 855a. No one was in the gym, as expected since it was early on a Saturday morning, so I got my choice of TV stations. And, needless to say it was Bravo. I made it through my first hour of walking with no problem. When 10a rolled around I only had 1 mile left to go! I managed to walk 5 miles in 1 hour and 22 minutes today. Not bad, if I do say so myself. By the way, Sarah didn't show up to walk with me and that's why I had to watch TV while walking.

Tomorrow's 3 miles is most likely going to be on the treadmill too. The weather isn't supposed to be much better. :(

In Twins news, DELMON YOUNG got a walk. Yes, you read that correctly "Mr. King of the Strike Out" actually held his bat and WALKED!

RonDL Treadmill update

Things have been stupid around here for the past few days and I was just WAY to frustrated to post. My last post was after I walked 3 miles on Tuesday. Then considering the things I write about here are either walking or the twins and nothing happened with either of those, it wasn't worth posting. Wednesday was a "rest" day, but not really for Will and me. We spent the evening the apartment and getting it "parent" ready. But if you are reading this, and you live outside of your parents house, you know that no matter what you do when your parents come to visit it is never to their satisfaction. This time, my mom managed to find wax on a placemat that hadn't been used since Chanukkah (meaning the wax was from the menorah). Well, when there are only 2 of you in the apartment and it is not big enough to have people over for dinner, you never look at the other placemats on the table. Well, needless to say, my mom found things wrong with the apartment that I would have never noticed. Oh well.

Then the Twins managed to go 3 days in a row and only earned 1 walk. Yes, that is right 1 frickin' walk! What team goes 3 days and can only draw one walk?! The TWINS! I mean you really have to try hard to get only 1 walk in 3 days! Most teams earn 1 walk within the first 3 innings of a game! Thank G-d today for Justin and Joe, otherwise I wouldn't have anything to write about.

On top of the Twins walk situation, I couldn't walk yesterday. Traffic was just too bad and I had to make it out to my inlaws by 645. So... I walked today for 4 miles. 4 miles on a treadmill is not that much fun. Especially when you are on the treadmill that doesn't have a book/magazine rack thingy AND you decide that the best magazine to read at 7p while you are walking is Cooking Light and you haven't eaten dinner. I had to close the magazine after 3 miles otherwise I was going to start eating the pictures out of the magazine! Seriously. Oh, and I was on the crappy treadmill because the RonDL treadmill was being ... you guessed it ... RonDL! Today the display decided to stop working. You could press all the buttons on it and it would go faster/slower etc, but you could not see how fast you were going or how far you had gone. I had to switch treadmills to the crappy treadmill. So you get a clear picture of my little gym, along the back wall there is the crappy treadmill, the RonDL treadmill, and the OK treadmill.

Tomorrow since the weather is supposed to be crap again (picture 45 and rain), Sarah is supposed to come over so we can walk our 5 miles on the treadmill. I'll let you know how that goes tomorrow! Until then, pray for Twins walks!

Good Day

Today was a pretty good day considering it is Passover. Passover tends to make people miserable because you are not allowed to eat any sort of levened product (meaning no bread, pasta, corn, cakes, cookies, you get the idea). I managed to make it through the day with my passover allowable food and even made a pretty good shrimp and rice dinner. It did need a bit more flavor, but overall, not too bad. I like cooking new things, even if they don't turn out too good, because then I know I can fix it another day.

Today was a good day for a fellow attorney in my office (or I'm going to assume it is). His first son, and first child, was born this morning! What a happy occassion. All I have to say is I hope this boy will grow up to be a Twins fan!

I got home around 7p today and decided that it was too late to walk outside, so I did my 3 miles on the treadmill. It wasn't too bad. The treadmill is nice for timing purposes. It seems like each time I do my 3 miles on the treadmill I decrease my time by about 15 seconds. Today I did 3 miles in 49:45. That means that I have shaved about 2 minutes off of my 3 mile time since my first walk! While it is nice to walk on the treadmill on certain days the one thing I cannot stand about going to a gym is the people who think that it is ok to talk on their cell phones while working out. Who wants to be on the other end of someone panting and thunk, thunk, thunking on a treadmill?! I know I wouldn't. AND what conversation is sooo important that you have to have it at the gym? I know the girl on the next treadmill's conversation was not that important. She was just talking about what she did last weekend? What? She does not have 5 minutes at any other part of her day to talk to this person?! Now you know one of my biggest pet-peeves. Also, anything Nick Punto does that is not a walk is a pet-peeve.

Back in the Twin Cities

I had a fun trip home this past weekend. It was warm and perfect walking weather. On Saturday I went for a nice long walk with my mom (actually, it was the required 4 miles). My mom and I walked up St. Charles, down Napoleon, then we returned home along Magazine. It was fun to walk in shorts and tshirt and not being freezing. Then Sunday, my sister Will and I walked around Audubon Park and up to the Levee. The River was the highest I have ever seen it. Its a good thing the state decided to open the spillway. My walks this weekend were pretty good overall. I'm not really in a writing mood tonight so I'll just give you the totals on baseball and post more tomorrow.

Welcome Pink Sprinkle

I know I didn't post yesterday. For some reason I was sooo tired that I didn't even have the energy to get on my computer. I just made dinner and watched Homicide and went to sleep. I didn't even watch all of the Twins game!

Today is a walking day so I have to post! I walked outside today, too! I love being outside, even when I'm not dressed quite right. For some reason I thought it was warmer than it was when I walked. I got home from work and put on a pair of shorts, tshirt and sweatshirt and headed out to walk. Well, I would have been more comfortable walking if I had worn sweatpants. Oh well, I made it and wasn't nearly as cold as last Saturday. I went to http://www.mapmyrun.com/ earlier today to see exactly how far it would be to walk from my apartment to different locations so long as I walked up and around the capitol, to St. Paul's Cathedral and then down Summit. I found out that it would be 3 miles (or just slightly more) if I walked to Western Ave., 4 miles if I walked to Dale, 5 miles if I walked to Victoria, and 6 miles if I walked to Lexington. So, since today was a 4 mile day I just walked to Western. It wasn't bad and I was able listen to a few podcasts I hadn't listened to yet. Of course my podcasts are all science related The first one I listened to was a national geographic one, the second one was from the archeological society of america (whose main sposor is the Turkist Bureau of Tourism), and the third one was from the discovery channel. The discovery channel weekly podcast is my favorite because they do 6 mini-stories about the coolest things in science that week. I highly recommend it if you are a science nerd like me. I will probably keep listening to these podcasts while I walk, that way I'll be smarter and stronger at the end of these 6 months!

Hello Springtime!

After a long hard winter like the one we have just started to come out of days like today bring all sorts outside. Today, I was one of those enjoying the weather. It was the first day above 60 since October. I can't believe that I haven't felt weather above 70 since my wedding in November. But back to my being outside...

Sarah, Mollie and I decided we would do our 3 mile walk around Lake Calhoun today. The path around Lake Calhoun is 3.1 miles so that worked out perfectly. The wind was unbelievable though. At points I was actually blown off the path (I was walking along the edge of it). It was even slightly chilly with the wind blowing over the ice that still remains on the lake. But, I'm not going to complain when it is in the mid-60s. Its in the 60s! Its in the 60s! Well, helloooo springtime! I cannot wait to start walking outside all the time!

Please consider donating to my walking effort! If you want to join the Pink Sprinkle team, as an official walker or as a volunteer, let me know!

Sunday/Monday

Its Monday and it has finally reached above 50 degrees outside! Yesterday was another 3 mile day. I wanted to do my 3 miles in the morning for some reason so that meant that I had to walk on the treadmill (it was still in the 30s outside). Well, I was regretting walking in the morning when it got into the upper 40s yesterday afternoon. Instead of walking 3 miles, I took Hildy out and Will took Guinny and we went on a little walk. Having a sniffy jack russel is not good for a long walk. You really never go anywhere with her.

Today is a rest day. I have decided that on rest days I'm going to make a plea to all my readers (if there are any) to consider donating something today. You can donate $1, $5, $50 whatever you feel comfortable with. If you don't want to donate today, please consider joining my "Walks for a Walker" program. As a reminder, in this program I am tracking the Twins walks from the first day of the season until August 1. You tell me how much you wish to donate per walk. It is pretty painless - you don't even need to watch the Twins. I do all the work for you! How easy could that be? If you are not a fan of the walk, but you like the homerun or the single, the double, or the triple then feel free to tell me and I'll track that too! Right now I'm also tracking the number of home runs for the Cubs. So, join my program or donate! Its fun! Its painless! It makes you feel good!

I'm walkin'
yes indeed
I'm walkin'
for you and me
I'm hopin' that you donate to me!

1st Training Walk

Today was the first official training walk for the Pink Sprinkles! We started off our day at 8:30a when Sarah picked me up to go to our walk. We were slightly nervous (or I was) because it was so cold outside. Sarah picking me up was exciting, though, because I got to meet one of our honorary Pink Sprinkles for the 1st time, Sarah's mom. We drove out to a shoe store where there was a 3day meeting about proper attire to wear and proper shoes. (Did you know that if you wear cotton socks on long walks or heavy exercising you can create "steam burns" on your feet?!) Basically what I learned is "cotton is rotten." This means that when I begin walking this summer I can't wear any of the tshirts I own because they absorb sweat. Its ok - I love buying new clothes! After these meetings, Sarah bought a new pair of sneakers and I got a pair of great greenish pants! I can't wait to wear them next week. Sarah and I also got pink-striped, pink-ribbon socks!

Sarah was excited to buy new shoes!

Me and my Pink Non-Cotton Socks

We're still warm because we haven't started walking...

Then we began our walk.
Our walk was SO EXCITING! We walked around a parking lot 6 times to equal 3 miles. For about the first 3 laps I was walking with Sarah's mom because Sarah is kind of a stroller and we weren't. Don't worry, I have complete confidence Sarah will pick up her pace. Even though we were walking around the parking lot, it was so much better than walking on a treadmill. Then about the 3rd lap Sarah rejoined us and we spent the next 3 laps coming up with new fundraising ideas. (Make sure you keep reading this post for future updates about our fundraisers!). By the end of our walk Sarah and I were pumped to do these fundraising events; however, we were frozen! Not one of us could feel our thighs because they were so cold. My hands did not thaw out until I got home.

Sarah and her mom in her pink shirt - we were so cold!

We walked our first 3 miles outside and we survived! This walk only made us more excited to do this event! Tomorrow is another 3 miles that will probably be inside because of the cold. Next week should be warmer ... So we can walk outside!

Update on the Twins. I hate Nick Punto, but I guess I have to like him today since he earned the one and only walk today.

Cardio

Today was a 30 mins of cardio day. I decided to work out on the ellipitcal today. I hate it when I go in the gym and the TV is set on something completely unmotivating and boring. There was a guy on the bicycle who had set the TV onto channel 2 (which is public tv). There was a biography-type show about some concert pianist. This pianist did have any sort of story to tell besides the fact that he is a concert pianist and he played the piano in Russia during the cold war, or something like that. Nothing motivating at all. And to top it all off, the bicycle guy left the tv on when he left the gym and did not even offer to change the channel. Normally, people are really nice here when they leave the gym (and that person set the tv channel) and that person normally offers to (1) turn the tv off, (2) change the channel or (3) ask if it is ok to keep the station on the current channel. But this guy was just being a jerk and left me to watch a tv show about some stupid, unmotivating tv show. Oh well...

Tomorrow is the first official meeting for the walk! My co-pink sprinkles Sarah and her mom are going with me to walk. I'll bring my camera!

Twins WIN! GO TWINS and their walks!

6 Miles So Far

In my training effort, I have walked 6 miles. I know when I go back and look at this blog in 6 months I'm going to laugh at walking 3 miles a night. Once again, Minnesota spring has prevented me from walking outside. It was actually snowing/sleeting/raining/wind when I left work today. Then tonight it started snowing/sleeting/raining/wind/lightening/thunder. What is going on? All I want to do is walk outside. 3 miles seems so far when you are walking on a treadmill. Last week when I walked to Mac that 4-5 miles wasn't all that bad. It actually went by pretty quickly. But 3 miles on a treadmill takes forever (actually only 50 minutes).

I did receive my team training stuff in the mail today. I am the team captain for the Pink Sprinkles. This means I'm responsible for motivating my team, making sure they are on task with raising money, and making sure they are having fun. Right now my official team consists of my mom, Will's mom, Sarah and myself. Our unofficial team members are Mel and Sarah's mom. They are honorary Pink Sprinkles. If you are interested in becoming a Pink Sprinkle, let me know. We are always open to new team members! Go Pink Sprinkles!

The weather is the same (or almost) in Chicago, so the Twins were rained out. That means for those of you donating per walk, you are off for a night.

My First Official 3 Miles

I did it! I walked my first 3 miles for the training process! (I have definitely walked 3 miles before ... I did almost 5 last Friday). The weather today sucked (low 40s and cloudy) so I was stuck with walking inside on the treadmill.

Walking 3 miles on the treadmill is OK as long as whatever is on TV is motivating. Let me tell you, The Biggest Loser is motivating. I mean these people lost 80+ lbs and are loving life. It was inspiring. I'm not saying that I'm going to lose 80 lbs, but the motivation they had kept me going on the treadmill. Glamour also helps, especially when it is the "bathing suit" issue. I love Glamour because they have only "real world" people as their models for the bathing suit issue. That means I'm not looking at perfectly stick thin, airbrushed people, or just pictures of bathing suits that are suppose to work on my body type. I like that the "models" have hips, boobs (GO BOOBS!) and a tummy.

You will be happy to know that the RonDL treadmill is all better. It has a new track and was plugged in. It looked so happy to be used. Though, I did get stuck with the lowest of the treadmills. The bottom of a treadmill pool is one that does not have a rack for my magazine/book. Everything had to be perfectly balanced. I was SHOCKED that I didn't drop my keys or my magazine the entire time I was on the treadmill.

Tomorrow is a "rest day" for me. I'll still keep you updated on the Twins! The Twins were off today so those of you donating according to the walks the Twins have this season, are off for a day.

Happy Tuesday!

And it has begun ... sort of

I know I promised to keep everyone up to date on the number of walks the Twins earn everyday and I failed to keep this blog up to date this weekend. I went away to a friends' wedding in New Jersey. Weddings are great! (Though I must say, mine was and probably will be the best ever!) At the bottom of this post is an up to date track of the Twins walks.

On another note, as related to this blog, training has officially started. Today was a "rest" day so I did just that... rested. Worked late, watched some Wire and some basketball and did not think about exercising. Tomorrow is the first day of real training!! I get to walk 3 miles at an 'easy' pace. It depends on the weather as to if I'm going to walk outside or not. I wonder if my building has fixed the RonDL treadmill... I guess I'll find out soon.

But since it is a rest day, I'll end here because there really isn't anything else to add. I'll let you know how the 3 miles goes tomorrow!

Walks for a Walker

I'm an avid Minnesota Twins fan, if you didn't know. But if you are reading this, then you know me, and you know that I just looove the Twins. However, the Twins have this one fault. Very few of them know how to take a pitch, which means that they never, or rarely draw walks. Which leads me to my donation idea. I need to raise at least $2,200 for the 3day walk, if you didn't realize that from the HUGE ad on the side of this blog. If you like baseball, or even if you don't, you can help out through my "Walks for a Walker" program. Here's the deal:

You offer to donate a certain amount of money per walk the Twins draw (10 cents, 25 cents, 50 cents, a dollar, you get the idea).

I will keep track of the number of walk the Twins have per game bewteen the start of the season (March 31) and August 1st.

You then donate a total amount based on that number of walks.

For example, if you offer to donate 50 cents per walk and the Twins draw 300 walks between the start of the season and August 1st, you would donate to my walk a total of $150.00. You can donate per week, month or the end of the time period. Whatever you feel comfortable with.

If you what to me out this way, send me an email and I'll keep a record for you and send you an email at the end of every month letting you know how many walks the Twins have drawn. If you don't like the Twins but like another baseball team, you can do this program for that team too. Let me know what team you want to work with, and I'll keep track of that.

I hope you like this idea and you are willing to help a walker walk 60 miles in 3 days!

You will always find the number of walks per game and for the month at the bottom of each post. Thanks for your help! I appreciate anything you can do to help me out.

Nothing new, just another post

The problem with not having an "official" gym membership and relying only on the gym in your building is that when the 2 "alive" treadmills are being used, you are stuck without anything... That happened to me today. See, it is still too cold in MN to really walk outside (I think the high today was 44 --which is warm!) so I'm stuck relying on the treadmill for the next few days. Well, today was one of those no-treadmill-available days. When I saw that I wouldn't be able to use a treadmill I went for the elliptical. The "official training book" says that you are supposed to get other cardio in besides walking, and the elliptical is cardio, right?

On another note, today I found out that one of the other attorneys is training for a marathon and in his training he was told he should sit on an exercise ball at work to strengthen his core. Well, he decided to bring this up in a room full of other male attorneys (see, I only work with men- it's a blast!). None of them knew what he was talking about besides me! Not one of them knew what an exercise ball is. How sad is that? So, the marathon-runner and I talked about the benefits of sitting on an exercise ball for a few minutes while everyone just sort of stared at us (and then made fun of us - well they'll see when we are both in shape!). Well, I hope that marathon-runner brings in an exercise ball to sit on at work, so I can do the same. I have wanted to do it for a while. I have 0 as in ZERO core strength and I thought that would help... or I could just go back to doing yoga too. (Yoga is cardio according to the "official training manual").

I am supposed to walk with Sarah tomorrow since it is supposed to be almost 50!
